Many big brand candles are made with paraffin wax, a byproduct of petroleum, and contain synthetic fragrances and dyes. These materials are not only harmful to the environment but can also pose risks to your health, and the health of your children and pets when burned.
Here are some of the common synthetic ingredients found in candles and the issues they can cause:
Paraffin Wax: Paraffin is the most common type of wax used in mass-market candles. When burned, paraffin can release harmful chemicals like benzene and toluene into the air. These substances are known carcinogens and have been linked to respiratory problems, headaches, and other health issues.
Synthetic Fragrances: The fragrance oils used in many candles are made from synthetic chemicals that mimic the scent of natural essential oils. However, these synthetic fragrances often contain phthalates, which are harmful chemicals linked to hormone disruption and respiratory issues. The chemicals in synthetic fragrances can also irritate the skin, eyes, and airways, making them especially dangerous for people with sensitivities or allergies.
Dyes and Additives: Many candles contain artificial dyes to achieve vibrant colors, but these dyes can release toxins when burned. They are typically derived from coal tar, a substance known to contain carcinogens. Some candles also contain chemical stabilizers or hardeners to improve the texture or appearance of the wax, which may release harmful fumes into the air.
We take our health seriously, and we choose to use natural ingredients that still give the same benefit of mass-produced candles, in a way that is safe for you and the environment. So, what ingredients do we use?? This is one of the biggest questions we get asked!
Soy Wax: Made from soybeans, soy wax is biodegradable, renewable, and burns cleaner than paraffin wax. Soy candles produce less soot, which means less indoor air pollution and fewer health risks. Additionally, soy wax is often easier to clean up and can be reused or recycled, making it a more sustainable option.
Cotton Wicks: Our wicks are cotton, and lead free, so you can rest assured knowing that your candles aren't seeping dangerous chemicals into your home.
A Blend of Fragrance + Essential Oils: Natural essential oils are a great alternative to synthetic fragrance oils. However, essential oils alone will not achieve the scent throw desired by the pro candle burner. We use a blend of fragrance and essential oils, derived from plants, flowers and manufactured from man-made materials.
NO Colours + Dyes: Many big brands use colours to either achieve a vibrancy on shelf, or to mask the yellowing effects that some fragrance oils create (which can look unsightly). We do not use dyes, we prefer to let the natural colour of soy wax develop, which is why some of our candle fragrances may be different colours, and why some yellowing may occur due to sunlight or just the natural progression over time. The alternative is using a bleach type product, which of course is chemical base and releases toxins into the air.
So, when choosing candles for your home, price is not the only thing to consider ;)
